Beach Touch Rules

These are the rules we use in our beach touch social competition at Sandstorm Beach Club.

Game Time:
15 minutes each half,  2 minute break between halves

Team Composition:
Ideally, each team should have 6 players (4 players and 2 substitutes)

Game Format:
A game is played between 4 attacking players (team in possession) and 3 defending players.

[This is the maximum numbers of players allowed on the field at any time. For mixed games,
there must be at least 1 female on the field at all times.]

Scoring:
The object of the game is to score more touchdowns than the opposition team.

1 point – touchball placed anywhere on or over the scoreline
2 points – touchball placed between 2 cones in middle of the scoreline
3 points -touchball placed on the blue cone (positioned in the right attacking corner behind the scoreline)

Basic Rules:
The 5 touch rule applies, that is, the attacking team has 5 touches while in possession of the
touchball. After the fifth touch, a change of possession occurs. A dropped ball by an attacker also results in a change of possession.

The game starts when the referee blows the whistle and one attacking player taps the touchball on the sand between the 2 cones in the middle of the scoreline (try line).

[Alternatively, the player tapping off can place the touchball on the scoreline, tap the ball with the foot, then pick it up and move forward.] The 3 other attacking players must be
behind the scoreline.

At the start of play and after each touchdown is scored, the 3 defenders line up on the halfway line.

The referee blows the whistle to commence play for each half, and also to recommence play after each touchdown is scored. Players should not tap the ball until the whistle is blown.

The attacking team (ie. team in possession) is permitted to have a maximum of 4 players on the field at all times. The defending team is permitted to have a maximum of 3 players on the
field at all times.

There is one exception to this rule – when a defender intercepts the touchball, the attacking team (which now becomes the new defending team) may continue to have 4 players on the field until the next touch is effected.

Similarly, following the intercept, the new attacking team (previously the defending team) can also have 4 players on the field.

Touch: a touch is defined as the minimum force required to effect a touch on a player's body. Hard and overvigorous touches by defenders will be penalised. An attacker can also effect a touch on a defender and then play on via a rollball. Hard touches by attackers will be also
penalised.

Rollball: when touched, an attacker must roll the touchball backwards between the legs, but no more than 1 metre. Alternatively, the attacker may place the touchball on the sand and walk over it. A loss of possession occurs if the rollball is not performed correctly. At the rollball, the dummy half picks up the ball and continues play by either passing the ball
or running with it.

Attackers must return to the mark where they have been touched before doing a rollball. If the attacker effects a rollball forward of (or over) the mark where the touch was made, the attacker will be penalised (ie. defending team receives a penalty tap).

Touchdown: a touchdown is awarded to the attacking team when the touchball is placed on or over the scoreline. Bonus points are awarded if the touchball is placed on or between the cones in the middle of the scoreline (2 points) or placed on the Blue cone (3 points). After a touchdown is awarded, the new defending team must retire to the halfway line. The new attacking team taps off from between the 2 cones in the middle of the scoreline.

Penalty: a forward pass by an att acker results in a penalty tap to the defending team.

Late pass: a late pass by an attacker (ie. attacker passes the ball after being touched) is also a penalty tap to the defending team. Note: a pass is considered to be 'late' by the referee if:

  • the hands of the attacker carrying the ball have not moved past the middle of the body, and
  • the attacker is touched prior to completing the delivery of the pass.
[If the referee does not consider the pass to be a 'late pass', he will call 'play on']

The dummy half may run with the ball after picking it up at the rollball. However, a loss of possession
occurs if dummy half is touched before passing the ball. Also, if dummy half runs across the attacking scoreline while in possession, a change of possession occurs.

When an attacker performs a rollball following a touch, the defenders must be back at least 3 metres from where the rollball occurs. Defenders offside at the rollball will be penalised or the referee can play the advantage to the attacking team.

When a rollball occurs, an onside defender (ie. back at least 3m) cannot move forward until the dummy half touches the ball. If there is no dummy half in position at the rollball, an onside defender can move forward. The dummy half cannot baulk or delay picking up the touchball. If so, the onside defenders may move forward, subject to confirmation by the referee.

Attackers must not effect a rollball unless touched first. If a voluntary touch occurs, that is, performing a rollball before being touched, the attacking team will be penalised (ie. the defending team receives a penalty tap).

In situations where an attacking team effects a quick rollball in an attempt to catch the defending
team offside, and a defender is offside (ie. not back 3m), the referee will play the advantage by allowing
the attacker to continue despite being touched by the offside defender. If, however, the defender is making
every attempt to get onside, that is, does not block the attacker or attempt in any way to slow down the play, and is touched by the attacker in possession, the touch will count (provided the defender is making
every effort to get onside). If the attacker in this situation is the dummy half, a change of possession
will occur (ie. dummy half caught)

Any knock-down of the touchball by a defender results in a handover to the defending team. If a defender deliberately knocks the touchball out of an attacker's hands, the attacking team receives a penalty tap (ie. defending team is penalised).

If the touchball is intercepted by a defender, the referee will call 'play on' if no touch is made.
A player from the new defending team must then leave the field when the first touch is made.
At the same time, an attacker can come onto the field of play.

Replacements: Players from either side can be replaced at any time provided there are no more than
4 attackers and 3 defenders on the field at any time. A touchdown will not be awarded to an attacking team found to have more than 4 players on the field when the touchdown is scored.

Sin bin: Players using bad or abusive language (or sledging) toward other players or the referee will either be penalised, sin binned or sent off, depending on the severity of the offence.Players guilty of continual hard touches or other infringements will face the same penalties.

A player sinbinned or sent off will take no further part in the game. The player can however be replaced, so that a team can still have a maximum of 4 attacking players  or 3 defending players.

The normal rules of Australian touch football will apply to matters not specifically addressed above.
